Did You Know? (Barnacle edition)

Barnacles have six pairs of fringed “feet” that sweep food particles into its body cavity? The barnacle is a crustacean that actually spends its life upside down!

I found this information on page 11 in the book Barnacles Eat With Their Feet by Sherry Shahan. This is a fascinating book about tide pools at feeding time, showing us who is food, and who got fed!

Monica Halpern’s book All About Tide Pools is full of very nice pictures and shows a wide variety of interesting sea life that we have here in the Pacific Northwest. Looking at her book will make you want to go down to the beach and see how many you can find!

The book Tide Pools by Carmen Bredeson tells us about tides, plankton, algae and how they are vital to the tide pools and the mollusks, crustaceans and other creatures that live in them.

Of course, we can’t talk about barnacles without at least mentioning “Barnacle Bill the Sailor”. The song that tells his story is available on CD, Vintage Children’s Favourites 1926-1950. There are many other fun songs on the CD that will be sure to bring a smile to your face as you remember them from your past.
